Software MacKiev's New Update Server is Online
The World Book update server which had problems on and off over the past
years, went down permanently and World Book, Inc. gave up on trying to revive
it. To solve this problem Software MacKiev has brought a brand new update
server online that we maintain ourselves so that the updating service is
resumed for Mac OS X users.

1 . RESTORING WORLD BOOK
Q: I purchased a computer with World Book 6.0.2 preinstalled, but
I have accidentally deleted World Book. How can I restore it without erasing
the hard disk?
A: We have prepared special instructions for restoring
World Book editions that were pre-installed. Select the appropriate instructions
based on the operating system version of your computer's Restore discs:
Restore World Book from:
• Mac
OS X 10.2 Restore discs
• Mac
OS X 10.1.4 or 10.1.5 Restore discs
Q: I purchased a computer with
Mac OS X 10.1.x and World Book pre-installed. When I upgraded to Mac OS
X 10.2 "Jaguar", I lost World Book. How can I restore the World
Book application without reinstalling older system software? A:
We have prepared special instructions for restoring World Book if it was
deleted when you upgraded to 10.2, Restoring
World Book After Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.2.
2 . CAN'T
LAUNCH WORLD BOOK
Q: When I attempt to launch World
Book, it bounces briefly in the Dock, then quits. There are no error messages.
A: This problem can be caused by a forward slash or
other special symbol or character in your hard disk name (for example "My
Disk 7/2003") or in the path between your hard disk and the World
Book folder. The special characters that are known to cause problems
include
¡, ™, £, ¢, ∞, §, ¶, ∫, œ,
∑. Also make sure that your hard disk name contains less than 27
characters. Rename your hard disk with something simple like "Macintosh
HD", make sure that no special characters are present in the path
to the World Book application, and try again.
3 . CAN'T FIND
WORLD BOOK
Q: I cannot find World Book on my
computer because the green World Book icon is not in the Dock.
A: While the World Book icon may not appear in the Dock,
World Book is, indeed, already fully installed. You can find it inside
the World Book folder, which is, in turn, inside the main Applications
folder on your computer's hard disk.
Tip: You can create a Dock icon by dragging the World
Book application icon to the Dock.
4. CAN'T INSTALL 2003 JAGUAR UPGRADE
Q: I've just purchased the Jaguar
Edition upgrade to World Book and I am getting an error message during
installation. What should I do?
A: One or more folders into which World Book Jaguar Edition
needs to be installed have been made read-only, probably by an application
that was installed previously. Click the link below to download the World
Book Repair Utility, which will correct the problem.
5 . UPGRADING WITHOUT LOSING WORLD BOOK
Q: I purchased a computer with Mac
OS X 10.1.4 or 10.1.5 preinstalled and World Book 6.0.2 preinstalled.
Now I want to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2, but keep World Book on my computer.
How can I do this?
A: During the installation of Mac OS X 10.2, when you
reach the Select a Destination window, select your current system disk,
and then click the Options button at the bottom of the window. Make sure
that the "Upgrade Mac OS X" option is selected and then continue
the installation. This will preserve all pre-installed software, including
World Book.
6 . INSTALLING
THE MEDIA CD
Q: Is it possible to install the
Media CD to my hard disk so that I won't need to insert it to see the
movies and animations on it?
A: Yes, it's possible. As an alternative to loading the
CD you can create and mount a 650 MB disk image where you can copy the
Media CD contents. You can create a disk image using the Disk Copy application
on your computer. You would then be able to mount the disk image instead
of inserting the Media CD.
Tip: Put an alias of the disk image in your startup
folder so that the image is automatically mounted each time you restart
your computer.

. CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTION
Q: When I change the screen resolution
on my computer, the World Book window no longer fits on my screen. What
should I do?
A: Quit World Book and restart it. World Book will then
fit correctly on the screen.

. COPYING PICTURES AND MAPS
Q: I try to drag a picture or movie
from the Media Center and it seems to drag ok, but no clipping is made.
Am I doing something wrong?
A: Upgrade to Mac
OS X 10.1.5 to resolve this problem. You can get information about
upgrading to the latest version at Mac
OS X 10.1.5 Update Download page. This problem is due to an issue
with clippings in Mac OS X 10.1. The problem is that clippings are automatically
given the name "Picture Clipping" without a number (whereas
they should be Picture Clipping1, Picture Clipping2, etc.). The result
is that only one clipping can be made automatically -- when you attempt
to make a second clipping to the same location (for example to the Desktop),
it is rejected without an alert and the picture just zooms back into the
Media Center. Until you upgrade, the workaround is to change the name
of each clipping from "Picture Clipping" to something else before
attempting to create more clippings.
Q: Sometimes I can't drag and drop or copy a picture.
Why?
A: A few pictures have restrictions on copying. While
the vast majority of World Book media can be copied using drag-and-drop
or copy/paste features from the Media Center, the owners of a few paintings
shown in World Book for Mac OS X have not given permission for the pictures
to be copied. If you click on a restricted picture in the Media Center,
you will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed.
Q: It seems that sometimes I can't copy and paste a picture
or map that I have copied before. I notice that this happens only when
either the Browse Media window or the Map Search window is open. What's
happening?
A: It's likely that the focus is on the Browse Media
window or the Map Search window instead of on the picture or map. To change
the focus to the picture or map, simply click it and you will then be
able to copy it. The ability to change focus from a picture to the Browse
Media window, or from a map to the Map Search window, allows you to copy
and paste text into the entry fields of those windows.
Note: A few paintings simply cannot be copied at all due to restrictions
on copying requested by the painting's owner. If this is the case, you
will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed when you click on the painting.
