The World Book update server which had problems on and off over the past
years, went down permanently and World Book, Inc. gave up on trying to revive
it. To solve this problem Software MacKiev has brought a brand new update

resumed for Mac OS X users.

1 . INSTALLING WORLD BOOK
Q: I've just purchased the Jaguar
Edition upgrade to World Book and I am getting an error message during
installation. What should I do?
A: One or more folders
into which World Book Jaguar Edition needs to install have been made read-only,
probably by an application that was previously installed. Click the link
below to download the World Book Repair Utility, which will correct the
problem.
Q: When I try to install World Book I get a
message that only users who are Administrators can install World Book,
and then the Installer quits. What does this mean?
A: World Book installs components that will be available to all
users sharing that Mac. Only users who are listed as having Administrator
privileges can access the necessary shared locations on the computer,
so only Administrators can install World Book. The owner of your Mac is
probably an Administrator. Additional Administrator privileges may be
set up in the Users Preferences dialog which may be reached from System
Preferences.
Note: When the installation procedure is completed, the user
who has installed World Book must launch it at least once before any other
users do, in order for other users to be able to use World Book's Internet
download features.
2 . LAUNCHING WORLD BOOK
Q: When I attempt to launch World
Book, it bounces briefly in the Dock, then quits. There are no error messages.
A: This problem can be caused by a forward slash or
other special symbol or character in your hard disk name (for example "My
Disk 7/2003") or in the path between your hard disk and the World
Book folder. The special characters that are known to cause problems
include
¡, ™, £, ¢, ∞, §, ¶, ∫, œ,
∑. Also make sure that your hard disk name contains less than 27
characters. Rename your hard disk with something simple like "Macintosh
HD", make sure that no special characters are present in the path
to the World Book application, and try again.

. TEXT AND GRAPHICS APPEARANCE
Q: Some of the text and graphics
look funny on my computer. What can I do about this?
A: If you are experiencing difficulties with World Book
and you are running Mac OS X 10.0.4, you should upgrade
to Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later. Some text-handling improvements were
made in later editions that make World Book look even nicer.
4. LOCATING
WORLD BOOK
Q: I cannot find the World Book Mac
OS X Edition on my computer.
A: Unless you have changed its location, you can find
the World Book application inside the World Book folder, which is inside
the main Applications folder on your computer's hard drive. If it is not
there, try searching for it: Click the Finder icon in the Dock, choose
Find... from the File menu, and search for "World Book folder"
in the local disks. If World Book is still not found, it is likely that
the application has been deleted and you will need to reinstall it.
Tip: Once you have located your copy of World Book,
it is a good idea to drag the World Book application icon to the Dock
to make it easy to find and launch in the future.
5 . HOME
SCREEN ISSUES
Q: I notice that sometimes World
Book quits unexpectedly when I wake it up from sleep, especially if it
was on the Home Screen when it went to sleep. Can I do something about
this?
A: Upgrade to QuickTime 6 to resolve this problem. You
can get information about upgrading to the latest version at QuickTime
Download page
This situation arises because of a known QuickTime problem in Mac OS X.
Until you upgrade, if you want to keep the Home Screen running continuously,
you should make sure that the screen does not go to sleep before the hard
disk spins down. Select Energy Saver from the Systems Preferences dialog
and deselect the two checkboxes that allow separate settings for the screen
and hard disk.
6
. CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTION
Q: When I change the screen resolution
on my computer, the World Book window no longer fits on my screen. What
should I do?
A: Quit World Book and restart it. World Book will then
fit correctly on the screen.
7
. COPYING PICTURES AND MAPS
Q: I try to drag a picture or movie
from the Media Center and it seems to drag ok, but no clipping is made.
Am I doing something wrong?
A: Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.1.5 to resolve this problem.
You can get information about upgrading to the latest version at Mac OS
X 10.1.5 Update Download page.
This problem is due to an issue with clippings in Mac OS X 10.1. The problem
is that clippings are automatically given the name "Picture Clipping"
without a number (whereas they should be Picture Clipping1, Picture Clipping2,
etc.). The result is that only one clipping can be made automatically
-- when you attempt to make a second clipping to the same location (for
example to the Desktop), it is rejected without an alert and the picture
just zooms back into the Media Center. Until you upgrade, the workaround
is to change the name of each clipping from "Picture Clipping"
to something else before attempting to create more clippings.
Q: Sometimes I can't drag and drop or copy a picture.
Why?
A: A few pictures have restrictions on copying. While
the vast majority of World Book media can be copied using drag-and-drop
or copy/paste features from the Media Center, the owners of a few paintings
shown in World Book for Mac OS X have not given permission for the pictures
to be copied. If you click on a restricted picture in the Media Center,
you will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed.
Q: It seems that sometimes I can't copy and paste a picture
or map that I have copied before. I notice that this happens only when
either the Browse Media window or the Map Search window is open. What's
happening?
A: It's likely that the focus is on the Browse Media
window or the Map Search window instead of on the picture or map. To change
the focus to the picture or map, simply click it and you will then be
able to copy it. The ability to change focus from a picture to the Browse
Media window, or from a map to the Map Search window, allows you to copy
and paste text into the entry fields of those windows.
Note: A few paintings simply cannot be copied at all due to restrictions
on copying requested by the painting's owner. If this is the case, you
will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed when you click on the painting.

WORLD BOOK ONLINE
Q: From What's Online / World Book
on the Web, I signed up for a free trial subscription to World Book Online.
When I try to play sounds on this site, an error message appears saying
I need a plugin. What's happening?
A: Visit http://www.real.com/realone/mac/
for a Mac OS X - compatible player for use with World Book Online. Please
note that World Book Online is a separate, subscription-only product,
and is not part of the World Book Mac OS X Edition.

TURNING OFF STARTUP AND HOME SCREEN MUSIC
Q: How do I shut off all music at
startup and on the Home Screen?
A: You need to turn off both Startup music and Home Screen
music:
- To switch off Startup music, deselect the "Play music at startup"
option in the General pane of World Book Preferences
- To switch off Home Screen music, click the Home Screen Music Settings
button on the bottom right corner of the Home Screen, and select the
"Music Off" option in the World Book Music Collection dialog
which appears.
