UPDATES
Software MacKiev's New Update Server is Online
The World Book update server which had problems on and off over the past
years, went down permanently and World Book, Inc. gave up on trying to revive
it. To solve this problem Software MacKiev has brought a brand new update
server online that we maintain ourselves so that the updating service is
resumed for Mac OS X users.

1. INSTALLING
WORLD BOOK
Q: World Book Jaguar Edition cannot be installed. The
installer gives a file error (file not found) during installation.
A: One or more folders
into which World Book needs to install have been made Read-only, probably
by an application that was previously installed. Click the link below
to download the World Book Repair Utility which will correct the problem.
Q: When I try to install World Book
I get a message that only users who are Administrators can install World
Book, and then the Installer quits. What does this mean?
A: World Book installs components that will be available
to all users sharing that Mac. Only users who are listed as having Administrator
privileges can access the necessary shared locations on the computer,
so only Administrators can install World Book. The owner of your Mac is
probably an Administrator. Additional Administrator privileges may be
set up in the Users Preferences dialog, which may be reached from System
Preferences.
Note: When the installation procedure is completed, the user who
has installed World Book must launch it at least once before any other
users do, in order for other users to be able to use World Book's Internet
download features. For more information, see Downloading World Book Updates.

LAUNCHING WORLD BOOK
Q: When I attempt to launch World Book, it bounces briefly in the Dock, then quits. I am running Mac OS X 10.3.
A: This may be a hardware-related issue that appears
only on Mac OS X 10.3 in combination with the latest Apple equipment -
new 17" 1.25 GHz iMacs with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra video cards,
1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz G5 with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra video cards, or
iBooks with Radeon 7500 video cards. We have created an updater that resolves
this issue, and contains other improvements made especially for Mac OS
X 10.3 users. You may download the World Book 7.4 updater here.
Q: When I attempt to launch World
Book, it bounces briefly in the Dock, then quits. There are no error messages.
A: This problem can be caused by a forward slash or
other special symbol or character in your hard disk name (for example "My
Disk 7/2003") or in the path between your hard disk and the World
Book folder. The special characters that are known to cause problems
include
¡, ™, £, ¢, ∞, §, ¶, ∫, œ,
∑. Also make sure that your hard disk name contains less than 27
characters. Rename your hard disk with something simple like "Macintosh
HD", make sure that the "World Book 2003 folder" is in the main
Applications folder on your hard disk -- and that neither of these folders
has been
renamed -- and try again.
3.
WORLD BOOK DOCK ICON
Q: I cannot find the World Book Jaguar
Edition on my computer.
A: Unless you have changed its location, you can find
the World Book application inside the World Book 2003 folder, which is
inside the main Applications folder on your computer's hard disk. If it
is not there, try searching for it: Click the Finder icon in the Dock,
choose Find... from the File menu, and search for "World Book 2003
folder" in the local disks. If World Book is still not found, it
is likely that the application has been deleted and you will need to reinstall
it.
Tip: Once you have located your copy of World Book,
it is a good idea to drag the World Book application icon to the Dock
to make it easy to find and launch in the future.

. CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTION
Q: When I change the screen resolution
on my computer, the World Book window no longer fits on my screen. What
should I do?
A: Quit World Book and restart it. World Book will then
fit correctly on the screen.
5
. COPYING PICTURES AND MAPS
Q: Sometimes I can't drag or copy
a picture. Why?
A: A few pictures have restrictions on copying. While
the vast majority of World Books media can be copied using the drag-and-drop
or copy/paste features from the Media Center, the owners of a few paintings
shown in World Book Jaguar Edition have not given permission for the pictures
to be copied. If you click on a restricted picture in the Media Center,
you will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed.
Q: It seems that sometimes I can't copy and paste a picture
or map that I have copied before. I notice that this happens only when
either the Browse Media window or the Map Search window is open. What's
happening?
A: It's likely that the focus is on the Browse Media
window or the Map Search window instead of on the picture or map. To change
the focus to the picture or map, simply click it and you will then be
able to copy it. The ability to change focus from a picture to the Browse
Media window, or from a map to the Map Search window, allows you to copy
and paste text into the entry fields of those windows.
Note: A few paintings simply cannot be copied at all due to restrictions
on copying requested by the painting's owner. If this is the case, you
will see that the Edit menu becomes dimmed when you click on the painting.

WORLD BOOK ONLINE
Q: From What's Online / World Book
on the Web, I signed up for a free trial subscription to World Book Online.
When I try to play sounds on this site, an error message appears saying
I need a plugin. What's happening?
A: Visit http://www.real.com/realone/mac/

Please note that World Book Online is a separate, subscription-only product,
and is not part of the World Book Jaguar Edition.
